HTC-Vive Install Base Now Approaching 150,000
Interesting data points from a lead VR developer who created a rare hit for the HTC-Vive:
Vive-exclusive sci-fi shooter Raw Data has become the first virtual reality game to hit $1 million in sales in the space of a month. Developer Survios made the claim in an interview with Fast Company, and said at least 20 percent of HTC Vive owners have purchased the action title... The game currently retails for $39.99 on Steam -- though it was launched at a discounted $31.99.
As a lead third party developer, presumably Survios has an inside track from Valve and HTC about how many units of the VR platform have been sold. Because that estimate strongly suggests how many Vives are now on the market:
Divide average price of game ($36) by $1,000,000, you get ~28,000, and if that's 20% of the HTC Vive install base, then 100% of the install base is ~140,000+. Which is still not a lot, but last July, Vive sales were estimated at only ~100,000. So either that earlier estimate was way low, Vive sales over the Summer since then have been great, or a combination of both. I haven't seen consumer model Oculus Rift sale numbers reported or hinted at recently, so it's difficult to make a one-to-one comparison. However, since we do know Oculus sold some 175,000 Rift DK1 and DK2 development kits over the course of their lifetime offering (August 2012 – October 2015), we do know that Vive is at least approaching those numbers at least.
