Strides season is about to kick off!

AUG. 30 -- The 2016 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer (MSABC) Across Second Life season is about to kick off and we invite you to join with us!

This year’s theme is  “Blossoms of Hope” runs through Nov. 4, 2016. 

"This year's Making Strides theme is "Blossoms of Hope," said Co-Chair Sandie Loxingly.  "We chose this theme to represent the seeds of hope that every person affected by cancer carries with them. Through our efforts in supporting Making Strides, we nurture these seeds and they blossom into a world with hope of a world of better treatments, early diagnosis and less loss from breast cancer."

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Across Second Life raises money for The American Cancer Society and is part of Relay For Life of Second Life.

Sept 1 Fundraising tools to be released
October 23 Opening of the Blossoms of Hope Showcase
October 29 Strides Walk starts at 10 a.m. SLT
October 30 Honor Ball for Survivors & Caregivers
Nov 4 All donations due from walk
Nov 5 Wrap-up on Relay dAlliez sim

Special awards will be given to top fundraisers.

About Breast Cancer:
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, other than skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, after lung cancer.
The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer some time during her life is about 1 in 8. The chance of dying from breast cancer is about 1 in 36. Breast cancer death rates have been going down. This is probably the result of finding the cancer earlier and better treatment. Right now there are more than 2.8 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.
The American Cancer Society estimates for breast cancer in men in the United States for 2016 are:
About 2,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed
About 440 men will die from breast cancer
Breast cancer is about 100 times less common among men than among women. For men, the lifetime risk of getting breast cancer is about 1 in 1,000. The number of breast cancer cases in men relative to the population has been fairly stable over the last 30 years.

Fun puzzle on /SecondLife: "Lately," says /C_Ghost_Williams, "it seems everywhere everyone tries to teleport me.. I'm 'Banned' though I am not on the list or whatever." SL Redditors in the thread exhaust most of the likeliest possibilities -- no, he's not a newb, no, he's not using a Copybot-enabled viewer, no he's not on individual sim owners' banned list, etc, etc. 

Likeliest possibility is one which suggests the state of Second Life in general:

"You could be estate banned," suggests /LilPixelxx. "This list is not available for public. Check to see if these sims are all held by the same group/avatar. You may have been banned by someone who owns 50+ estates." I.E., Second Life land has fallen under the ownership of so few land barons, it can seem like they control access to SL in general. In any case, the mystery persists...

As Labor Day in the U.S. gets closer we expect summer vacations to come to an end, schools to be back in session, and the fall season to be right around the corner.  One unexpected event is about to happen as well.  After six years of an August date, the Sunburst Premier Caribbean Carnival is making its 7th year return on Saturday, September 3, 2016.  The largest Caribbean Carnival celebration on Second Life, this event has been anticipated by residents since its inception in 2008.  

Unfortunately in 2015, the carnival was cancelled due to other important obligations.  At that time I knew I wanted to bring it back the following year and here we are.  Also returning for its 2nd year, Latin Heat, “The hottest night of the year”.  This pre-carnival event on Friday, September 2, 6-8pm slt is to acknowledge and celebrate the Latin Culture in the Caribbean.  The DeeJay for this event is DJ Spice (Spiceme Fanizza), the Sensual Latina of Break Beatz Ent. in her 2nd year, bringing that salsa, meringue, reggaeton heat and whatever else she has simmering.  

Latin Heat will be held for the first time at the legendary Cruiz Cotton Club.  Thank you to Cruiz & Starlaa Boa Control for allowing me the opportunity to host the event at your venue.  The Control’s have sponsored the Caribbean Carnival consistently for the past five years.  For the 7th anniversary of the Caribbean Carnival we have a lineup of four great DeeJays.  One important mainstay of this event is that all of the music is provided by DeeJays with direct ties to, or are from the Caribbean.  There are three DeeJays: DJ Cinfull (Cinfull Vixen), DJ Vixen (Suzie Coba), and DJ Kamaria (Mrs. Badger) from Break Beatz Entertainment (BBE) participating in this annual event for the first time, and DJ IDJGrock returning for his second year.  The Hosts for this event are Zariaunna Madeye and Nomi Loven both highly experienced BBE staff members. Does IDC Really Think People Will Buy Over 225 Million AR/VR Devices By 2020?

It sure seems so, based on the venerable analyst firm's most recent report:

[W]orldwide revenues for the augmented reality and virtual reality (AR/VR) market will grow from $5.2 billion in 2016 to more than $162 billion in 2020... Sales of AR/VR hardware will generate more than 50% of worldwide revenues throughout the forecast period.

This $162 billion figure has been widely reported everywhere, but as with the Bloomberg/Business Intelligence report, no one I know has run the back-of-envelope calculations on this figure. But since IDC's report says over half this $162B revenue is from hardware devices, that's $81 billion. And if we divide that by $350 per individual device sale at retail -- averaging the price of premium devices like Vive and low end smartphone add-ons -- we get well over 225 million. (And that's estimating downward.)

I've asked the report's lead author, Christopher Chute, if my assumption is correct, because 225 million devices sold in such a short time is a massive market:

For a couple comparison points, only one videogame console, the Playstation 2, has anywhere near that install base, and that took over a decade, while the latest videogame consoles, the PS4 and Xbox One, have moved less than 100 million total in the last 3 years.

A couple more points: It took the iPhone over 8 years to exceed 225M in sales, and that's, you know, a fricking phone. And right now, in 2016, if we're to include Google Cardboard's 5 million, and Samsung Gear's ~1 million, and 10 million China-made smartphone add-ons, and the under 1 million sales of both Vive and Oculus Rift, we're well under 20 million total so far. So we're talking 10x growth in under 5 years. Which I guess is possible, but when people start talking about adoption rates comparable with the iPhone, I'd say it's time to start scrutinizing these estimates much closer.

Lots of interesting comments in last week's post about full-perm scams in the SL Marketplace (i.e., unauthorized resell of avatar enhancements). I closed by hinting at a solution I would describe in another post, but longtime SLer/NWN reader Shockwave Yareach may have an even more elegant proposal:

Of course there is a solution. It is a small change to the permissions system. Simply add the checkbox "no resell" to permissions, signaling that full perm stuff may not be sold. And add another checkbox called "no rebox" as well. Buy a box of textures to make your own products? That'll work. But try to sell the same box of textures and make your money back? That won't work. Sure you can take the time to put all the textures in your own box and sell that - if the textures are set "no rebox" they cannot be stuck in another box, just used to texture it.

That strikes me as a good idea, at least to keep scams down to a manageable, dull roar. I'm not sure if it's technically feasible without a lot of front back-end jiggering for Linden Lab, but at least it's worth thinking about. Until then, however, maybe SL content creators should follow Vanni's advice:

I have made things over the years and sold them, and I've never handed out anything full perms. Copy/no-trans or trans/no-copy only. In my opinion, the only full perm things that should be sold are components that the original maker knows will be used to make more clothes, or parts for homes, or what have you. And those are sold at a higher price as the maker knows they are sold to one avatar once, and hopefully not handed out to others. If a seller is not willing to have people do them in with reselling things inconsistently with the seller's intent, setting proper permissions are the only real protections they have. Always expecting the worst out of people is a better life algorithm than blind trust people will do right.

Sad to say, she may be right about the blind trust part.

My first share. This is the full collection of the ARGRACE Arata mesh hair demos. This includes the texture for all 40 colors. The dae used for all of them is in the initial folder along with the Ash Black textures. Once you upload, simply edit linked parts to delete the floaty and select face to change the small "demo" textures on a few of the hair parts to replace with the regular textures. This does not include the hairbase tattoos as there is a free collection of those from another creator on the marketplace.

The Botanica Butterfly Hunt is back in mesh! Botanica recently moved and in a terrible terraforming accident the bulldozer knocked over and broke the butterfly transportation cage. The staff could only watch helplessly as our rare and endangered butterfly collection escaped into the wild. Volunteers are needed to round up those that are flight impaired and at risk.

Singularity Tribe’s Bon Odori is a cultural, music, and dance festival held during Obon. Obon is a tradition originated from Japan to honor and remember one’s ancestors.
